SEO, AEO and GEO: Why They Matter

What is Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)?

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) has been a key part of digital marketing for years. At its simplest, it’s about making sure your website can be found when potential customers are searching for the products, services or information you provide.

Traditionally, that meant getting the fundamentals right. Technical SEO makes sure search engines can properly crawl, understand and index your website, while on-page SEO focuses on creating useful, relevant content around what your audience is actually searching for.

But search is changing – and quickly.

How is the search landscape changing?

More of us are turning to AI-powered tools such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini & Claude to ask questions, research products and services, compare businesses and even get recommendations. Instead of typing a few keywords into Google and scrolling through a list of links, we can now ask a full question and receive an answer almost instantly.

That doesn’t mean SEO is dead. Far from it. But it does mean businesses need to start thinking beyond traditional Google rankings.

What are AEO and GEO?

This is where Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) and Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) come into play.

AEO is about making your website content as easy as possible for AI platforms to understand and use when answering questions. Clear, well-structured content, relevant schema markup and genuinely useful answers to the questions your customers are asking can all improve your chances of being surfaced.

GEO takes the idea a little further. AI platforms aren’t necessarily looking at your website in isolation – your wider digital presence matters too. What are reputable third-party websites saying about your business? Are you being mentioned by trusted industry sources? Do you have genuine customer reviews? Are you demonstrating expertise beyond your own website?

Digital PR, expert commentary, industry coverage, social media and customer reviews can therefore become part of the bigger search picture.

How do these strategies work together?

Ultimately, SEO, AEO and GEO shouldn’t be viewed as three completely separate strategies. They’re increasingly different parts of the same challenge: making sure your business is visible, understandable and trusted wherever your customers choose to search.

The way we search may be changing, but the principle behind good search marketing hasn’t. Be useful, be relevant and give people (and now AI) a reason to trust you.
